Spicebush is categorized as a Genus. A Genus is a rank used in the biological classification of living organisms. It is found throughout Ohio and it grows from 12-15 ft. tall. When crushed, the plant emits a lemon/spicy fragrance. The Spicebush has bright green oval shaped leaves with pointy tips. The oils from the Spicebush was used for bruises and rheumatism. Rheumatism is a term used for medical problems affecting the connective tissue between the bones. Spicebush is an understory shrub, which means that grows in a layer of vegetation beneath the main canopy of a forest. A canopy is an aboveground portion of a plant community formed by plant crowns.
